Essex for Woodwork

Essex is noted for its timber work and several local churches demonstrate the skills of medieval craftsmen:

South Hanningfield has a 15th century belfry constructed around four posts with curved braces. The impressive door of 1400 has some splendid iron work.

The church at the curiously-named Ramsden Bellhouse (after a family called Bellhus) was rebuilt in 1880 but retains its wooden tower and spire with huge beams, oak doorway and belfry steps. There is a 14th century timber porch and within may be found a wooden 17th century font cover and seven foot long medieval chest.

St Mary, Runwell has two timber porches enriched with Tudor roses and a door with its original hinges. According to local legend, the curious burnt mark on its inside comes from the devil when he was shut in the church by a priest. He probably had time to admire the poor box, hollowed from a single block of timber.

Three Reasons Why You Might Not Want to Stain the Floor Yourself

Floor staining is a tricky business, with a host of variables that can affect the way your hardwood flooring and the stain can react together. While it’s a common mistake that all floors are stained, there are some species of wood that are just not meant to be dyed a different colour – pine sap will alter the way the boards absorb the pigment and there can even be differences between springwood and latewood that are used in the same floor.

Here are three great reasons why staining your floor might be a job best left to the professionals.

1) You'll see every little imperfection

Think you did a great job sanding that floor? You’ll think again once you apply a stain to the raw wood. Because pigment is attracted to depressions and indentations in the wood, it loves the kind of scratches that can be left after floor sanding. As soon as you apply the stain, all those cross grain scratches and sander swirls will be horribly visible, and the only way to get rid of the effect is to re-do your floor sanding and start again.

2) Don't overstain

The temptation is to believe that you can keep applying stain to achieve the effect you want. In fact, wood has a finite capacity to accept the pigment and won’t get darker or richer in colour if you keep applying coat after coat. All that happens is that the stain starts to bleed back through the wood, creating ugly patches of stain. This most often occurs in the gaps between boards and can ruin your coats of poly. You’ll also need to ensure that all the floor finishing products you use are compatible with each other, otherwise, however careful you’ve been, you can still end up with a bleed which will ruin the finish.

3) You'll wait a long time

If you thought applying stain was a quick and easy job you could do quickly and then get on with the finish coats, you’d be wrong. Many a DIYer anxious to get the job finished and the room usable again, has started with their poly coats too soon, resulting in a finish that won’t bond or cure properly. Unless you’re prepared to add an extra 48 hours and more to your floor finishing, then you’re better off contacting the professionals, or repeating your floor sanding and adding a nice clear coat of poly!
